President John Dramani Mahama has relieved Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his position.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno is set to be sworn in as new police chief on Friday, March 14, 2025.
Dampare, who was appointed as Ghana’s 23rd IGP in 2021, spearheaded several high-profile reforms within the Ghana Police Service, including efforts to improve professionalism, combat violent crimes, and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
However, his tenure was not without controversy, including accusations of political bias and internal tensions within the service.
The new appointment follows an injunction jointly filed at the Supreme Court by policy think tank IMANI Africa and security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning, seeking to prevent President John Dramani Mahama from dismissing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and other heads of security agencies.
The injunction, filed at the Supreme Court, seeks to challenge the President’s authority to terminate the appointment of key public officers without proven misconduct.
The plaintiffs, IMANI Africa and Professor Kwesi Aning, argue that the removal of the IGP, along with other heads of uniformed security services, should only occur in cases of established misconduct or misbehaviour.
