Dr. Senanu Djokoto Unveils GH¢1 Million Recovery Plan for Keta Flood Victims

Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in charge of operations has announced a major recovery initiative aimed at supporting flood-affected residents in the Keta Municipality. The initiative seeks to mobilise One Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢1 million) to provide relief, support recovery efforts and contribute to rebuilding communities severely impacted by the devastating floods.

Dr Djokoto made the announcement after visiting several affected communities over the weekend to assess the extent of damage and sympathise with residents whose lives and livelihoods have been severely impacted by the overflow of the Keta Lagoon. The flooding, which has affected more than 50 communities across the municipality, has displaced residents, submerged farmlands, damaged houses and disrupted basic services. Several schools, including facilities in Anyako, Seva, Keta AME Zion School and Anlo State School, have also been affected. Some of the affected communities include Laworshime, Hagodzi, Mamime, Sonugbe, Agorbledokui, Anlo-Afiadenyigba, Vui, Dzelukofe-Amugo, Abutiakofe, Keta Central, Adzido-Vodza and Havedzi. More than 30 houses have reportedly collapsed, while large acres of farmland remain underwater.

Dr. Djokoto said although various institutions and individuals had provided support to affected residents, more assistance was required to address the scale of the disaster.

“While I have been able to mobilise some support through my personal and professional networks to complement ongoing interventions, much more remains to be done. I am therefore proposing a major fundraising initiative to raise GH¢1 million to support relief, recovery and the rebuilding of lives and communities affected by this disaster,” he said.

Dr Djokoto commended stakeholders, particularly the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Keta Municipal Health Directorate and the NHIA, for their response and commitment towards supporting flood victims.

“I commend the tireless efforts of all stakeholders, particularly NADMO, the Keta Municipal Health Directorate and the NHIA for their swift response and unwavering commitment to supporting affected communities,” he added.

He further pledged to collaborate with the Keta Municipal NHIA office to introduce interventions aimed at addressing emerging health concerns linked to the flooding.
