Hawa Koomson Hands Over 100 Outboard Motors to Fisher Folks in Keta and Anloga Districts

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has given out over 100 Outboard-Motors to the fisher-folks in the Keta and Anloga Districts.

This came as part of her support to the indigenous players in the fishing industry along the southern coastal zone who have applied for these motors to boost their works.

The Member of Parliament for the Keta constituency Hon Dzudzorli Gakpey, together with the Chief of Keta, Torgbui James Ocloo V received the items on behalf of the fisher-folks in these two Districts.

Hon. Koomsom, while giving out the items, indicated that the government is committed to ensuring that the fishing industry players are provided with the necessary gadgets.

“Government will do everything to give you the necessary support and you too, especially the Chief Fishermen should also help the government by ensuring that the use of illegal and bad methods used to harvest the fishes from the ocean are eliminated.” She added.

She explained that most fishermen in Ghana use acids, carbides, lights and other unacceptable techniques to fish and the law that regulates the sector, frowns on them.

Hon Dzudzorli Gakpey reiterated, and urged the Chief Fishermen in these two districts, to support the government in eradicating the menace of using inappropriate means to fishing from the country’s oceans.

He however lauded government’s support to the fisher folks, adding that he will join hands with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the outboard motors are given to all who applied for and deserved them.
