It’s Unjustifiable to Increase Transport Fares – Volta GPRTU Opposes Hike
The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has strongly opposed any proposed increase in transport fares, describing it as unjustifiable amid current economic conditions.
The union argues that recent adjustments in fuel prices and other operational costs do not warrant an immediate fare hike, especially when commuters are already struggling with financial burdens.
Speaking on behalf of the union, a senior GPRTU official in the Volta Region stated that while drivers and transport operators face rising maintenance costs, an increment in fares would place additional hardship on passengers.
“We understand the challenges in the transport sector, but now is not the right time to introduce new transport fares. Many passengers are already struggling to afford daily commuting costs,” the official said.
Transport operators have called for government intervention to stabilize fuel prices and reduce taxes on spare parts to prevent unnecessary fare increases.
Meanwhile, commuters have welcomed the GPRTU’s stance, urging transport unions and government agencies to find a balanced solution.
As discussions continue, the Volta GPRTU has assured passengers that it will resist any attempt to impose an unjustified fare hike, advocating for fair and reasonable pricing in the transport sector.
