I lost six major deals after I contracted COVID, says Celestine Donkor
According to Donkor, in spite of the letdown, she benefited immensely from the lockdown because gospel music was on demand during the COVID pandemic.
The Ghanaian gospel musician Celestine Donkor says she lost many contracts because she was infected with COVID-19.
“I had to cancel six major deals and had to refund monies, because when programme organisers are not having you, they have to get a different artiste to fill in. It was really terrible for me,” Donkor said on Asaase Radio’s Between Hours show on Monday (28 February).
According to her, in spite of the letdown, she benefited immensely from the lockdown because gospel music was in demand during the COVID pandemic.
“But also, on the other hand, we had our streaming numbers going up, which is something that has landed me in partnership with Boomplay,” the songwriter said.
Prepare for media interviews
The hitmaker of “Agbebolo” advised up and coming gospel artistes to also prepare well ahead of interviews to avoid controversies.
“Go with what you want to say in mind, and no matter how the questions are asked, make sure that what you went there to say is what you are saying.
“I have come to the understanding that they [media personalities] are doing their job and I have to know how to do mine as well. It gave me the opportunity to learn,” she said.
The 2019 NGMA Gospel Artiste of the Year said she is starting to be recognised and appreciated in the industry.
“It took a while but it’s worth it. I have been in the industry for 16 years, and I want to be as professional as I can be. This is one of the things I wished I embraced earlier, being professional as possible,” Donkor told her host, Naa Ashorkor.
The annual anticipated Celestial Praiz will be happening at the Victory Bible Church in Awoshie, Accra on 6 March (starts 5pm).
“We have five nations coming together for this year’s Celestial Praiz,” Donkor said. “We have Ghana on the bill, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria.”
This year’s edition, themed “Atmosphere of Testimonies”, will bring together the most exciting and the chart-topping hit-makers of the year on one stage.
They include Obaapa Christy, Bethel Revival Choir, Kofi Owusu Peprah, Yadah from Nigeria, Joel Iwaga from Tanzania and Mercy Masika from Kenya.
