Many of Covid-19 cases still among the middle, upper middle class – GHS

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has revealed that many of the active cases of the coronavirus in Ghana are still among the middle and upper middle class.

Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday January 28, he said the number of new infections remain high but has stagnated and no further increases being observed in the last one week

“Active cases continue to rise due to the sudden surge in the last few days. The cases from Greater Accra Region are mainly located in Accra metropolitan area and its adjoining districts.

“Many of the cases are still among the middle and upper middle class and are among families and close friends. There is an increasing number of workplace outbreaks,” he said.

He further stated that travelers into the country who test “positive as detected at the airport remains a challenge however the numbers of positive is on the decline.”

Dr Kuma-Aboagye further said there is the “Need to intensify adherence to COVID-19 Protocols.

“Promotion of decongestion at the work place, encourage virtual meetings and working from home, Minimize indoor dining/activities where possible. Workplace protocols must be respected.”

The number of COVID-19 cases recorded Wednesday January 27 stand at 616, bringing the total active cases to 3,813 and the total confirmed cases at 62,751 and the total number of deaths reaching 377. The latest recovery cases stands at 58,561 as on Thursday, January 28, on their website.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, has revealed that 10million face masks have been distributed to schools after the reopening in order to help fight the coronavirus.

He stated that that 9.9million hand sanitizers have also been distributed.

Addressing the media on Thursday January 28, Prof Opoku-Amankwa gave the breakdown of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that have been distributed to the schools.

 “Face mask, 10 million, Hand sanitizers 9.9million, 6-in-1 tissue paper, 1.65million, 4.5 Gallon liquids soap, 400,000, Veronica buckets, 53,000, Thermometer Guns, 38,000, 4.5 Gallon Hand sanitizers 140,000, electronic dispensers, 25,000, Face shields, 300,000,” he said.

He further stated that a team of monitors including personnel from GES and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) continually monitor, evaluate and report on progress from the schools in terms of the prevention of the spread of the virus.

Similarly, the authority also replenishes PPE and WASH facilities

“Maintain manageable class sizes – District Directors have been given directives to make assessments of school specific needs in coordination with the Heads of Schools to decongest where necessary.

“Support learning at home – Online, Ghana Learning TV/Radio.”
