MP decries shooting incident at Aflao, calls for calm

The Ketu South Member of Parliament (MP), Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has denounced the shooting incident that occurred in Aflao on Sunday. A military commander is said to have shot at a motorbike (Okada) rider, wounded an immigration official during a dispute at the Aflao ‘beat 9’ border.

She claimed that the region’s peace and security were not being served by the rising hostility between the border town’s citizens and the security forces in the wake of the incident.

“You see, what is happening now could have been avoided if the soldier behind the shooting had exercised a little more discretion – much as I respect the professionalism of the military and all other security agencies, I think they ought to exercise a little more discretion sometimes in handling these issues between them and civilians,” the MP said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Tuesday.

The Ketu South MP called on locals, especially the youth who have vowed to unleash their wrath on the security agencies, to exercise caution and refrain from taking the law into their own hands in the interest of peace and security. The MP was in the constituency to express sympathy with the victim, Korku Tengey, and his family and to interact with the security agencies on how to maintain the peace moving forward.

Being on the right side of the law is preferable to breaking it. Although what happened is regrettable, the security agency employees are also our brothers and reside nearby with their families, therefore let’s follow the law and make sure that we do the right things in the interest of peace,” Madam Gomashie stated.

She urged the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and Maxwell Kofi Lugudor, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu South, to initiate an exhaustive probe into the occurrence to put the subject to rest.

In order to stop these terrible tragedies from happening again, she pleaded with the security agencies to act with the utmost professionalism as they carried out their legal obligations to the state.
