Speaker warns MPs: Don’t attend proceedings if you’re COVID-19 positive

The speaker also gave a final caution to some 50 MPs who have still not tested for COVID-19 to do so by Wednesday

Speaker of parliament Rt Hon Alban Bagbin has cautioned MPs who have tested positive for COVID-19 to desist from attending proceedings in the Chamber or risk having their names published.

The first deputy speaker Joseph Osei Owusu who presided over today’s sitting and made the communication on behalf of the speaker said, MPs who have tested positive are expected to stay away from the Chamber, as well as, their  offices and isolate at home until they recover.

Addressing members of the House, the speaker also gave a final caution to some 50 MPs who have still not tested for COVID-19 test to do so by close of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, minority chief whip Muntaka Mubarak is asking the speaker to disclose the names of the affected MPs to the chief whips of both sides of the House to enable them assist leadership enforce the mandatory isolation directive.

Case update

At least 772 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed taking Ghana’s active cases to 5,515, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is reporting.

Total number of confirmed cases since March 2020 now stands at 67, 782.

Eight more individuals have passed on increasing the death toll to 424 since the last update, reports the official GHS website. Health officials have recorded 61, 843 recoveries.
