Volta Region Records 778 New HIV Infections in 2023 – Health Authorities

Volta Regional Technical Coordinator, Ghana AIDS Commission Mrs. Mary Naa Asheley Anyomi in the Volta Region have reported 778 new HIV infections in 2023, raising concerns about the spread of the virus and the need for strengthened prevention efforts.

The latest figures, released by regional health officials, highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, testing, and treatment to curb the rising trend.

According to health experts, the new infections cut across different age groups, with a significant number recorded among the youth. Officials attribute the increase to factors such as unprotected sex, low awareness of HIV prevention methods, and stigma surrounding voluntary testing.

“This figure is alarming and calls for urgent action to intensify education and encourage early detection through routine testing,” a health official stated.

The Ghana Health Service and other stakeholders have called for stronger community-based interventions to address the growing concern.

Health workers are urging individuals to adopt safer sexual practices, get tested regularly, and seek early treatment to prevent further spread.
