Coup plotters case: Six sentenced to death, three others acquitted

An Accra High Court has convicted six of the ten alleged coup plotters for conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.

The six have been sentenced to death by hanging.

However, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Gameli and Corporal Seidu Abubakar have been acquitted.

Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the chief executive officer of Citadel Hospital (now deceased) and ACP Dr. Agordzo together with eight others were charged on 24 April 2021 for conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason and high treason.

But all ten accused persons pleaded not guilty and were granted bail during the trial.

The passing of Dr Mac-Palm led to the removal of his testimony from the records of the court

The prosecution, led by AG Godfred Yeboah Dame, included figures from the Attorney General’s Department, such as Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, Director of Public Prosecution, Hilda Craig, Winifred Sarpong, Lawrencia Adika, and Akosua Agyapomaa Agyemang.

Speaking to the media after the ruling, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame said, the case has close “significance to the Constitution of Ghana.
