Teargas fired as police clash with NDC protesters in Ashanti Region

Angry National Democratic Congress (NDC) protesters clashed with security forces during a protest against the Electoral Commission in the Ashanti Region.

The clash is said to have erupted following a disagreement over allowing the protesters entry to the local EC office. The police had to fire teargas to disperse the violent crowd.

One person was injured in the process as the protesters overpowered the police to gain access to the office.

he party has embarked on a nationwide protest to force a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

The NDC leadership in the Ashanti Region is yet to present its petition to the election management body.

Meanwhile …

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has refuted claims that any demonstrators were injured during a protest at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) office in Kumasi. The police also dismissed reports of a shooting incident at the site.

In a statement, the police service explained that while some protesters had breached an agreed arrangement by entering the EC office compound by force, officers successfully restrained them without resorting to gunfire or causing harm.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to state that there has been no shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission and no demonstrator has been injured by the police,” the statement says.

It further explains: “However, some demonstrators who went against the agreed arrangement by forcing their way into the compound of the EC office were restrained.”
