Update: Six rescued, eight still missing in Black Volta tragedy
Six more people have been rescued, while eight others are feared drowned after a boat carrying displaced persons capsized on the Black Volta at Dinie Tuonbo in Northern Ghana on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
This brings the total number of rescued persons to 12.
According to reports, the boat was carrying twenty passengers when they attempted to cross the river, leading to the tragic accident.
The passengers were fleeing Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, which has turned violent due to a land dispute.
On Tuesday, August 26, the Chief’s Palace in Gbiniyiri was burned down amid escalating tensions, just days after deadly clashes in the area left six people dead and 18 others injured. The conflict reportedly began when the local chief sold a piece of land to a private developer, a move opposed by some residents. Tensions rose when the developer attempted to begin work on the land and was met with resistance from the community.
Violence erupted on Sunday, August 24, resulting in the deaths of five people. Another person was killed the following day. Many of the injured remain in critical condition, suffering from gunshot and machete wounds.
The ongoing conflict has forced many residents—especially women and children—to flee their homes. Several houses and properties have also been destroyed.
