President Akufo-Addo upgrades Ho, Sunyani, and Wa to metropolises
President Nana Akufo-Addo has given executive approval for the reclassification of several local government areas, elevating selected districts to municipalities and municipalities to metropolises.
In a statement on Wednesday (4 December), the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGRD) confirmed the upgrades, which align with legal provisions under Act 936.
The decision sees the Ho, Sunyani, New Juaben, and Wa Municipal Assemblies upgraded to metropolitan status, marking a significant milestone for these areas.
Additionally, Offinso North, Brim North, and Karaga District Assemblies have now attained municipal status.
The announcement follows the president’s commitment during his recent regional “thank you” tour.
Addressing local assemblies, President Akufo-Addo assured them that deserving districts and municipalities would be elevated, revealing that final approvals were imminent.
The upgrades aim to enhance administrative efficiency and improve service delivery in the affected areas, reflecting the government’s broader decentralisation agenda.
