GPRTU blocks persons without facemask from boarding vehicles

The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued an order to its members across the country to bar people without facemask from boarding their vehicles.

Nana Nimako, National Chairman of the GPRTU, told Johnnie Hughes on 3FM that the union is determined to assist the government to tackle the virus by ensuring that all passengers comply with the directive to wear the facemask.

He explained that some passengers refuse to wear the masks because they do not believe in the existence of the virus in the country.

But, Mr Nimako said, whether or not these passengers believe in the reality of the virus, they will not be allowed to board their vehicles if they do not put on their facemasks.

The GPRTU’s directive to its members follow an instruction given to the security agencies by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo  to enforce the COVID-19 protocols.

In his 22nd update to the nation on the measures outlined to deal with the virus, Mr Akufo-Addo said “I have instructed the Inspector General of Police to direct officers, men, and women of the police service to ensure the rigorous enforcement of the law on mask-wearing at all public places and in public transport.”

Following this, Nana Nimako told Johnnie that “We have enforced the protocols to be followed but some people don’t understand what is really going on.

“Some people think that even Covid-19 is not in our country but we are trying , we have entreated our station masters  at the stations and the terminals to ensure that anyone who comes to the station without facemask should not be allowed to board any bus at the stations. So we are enforcing it.”
