AKATSI CRISIS: – Youth Parliament to petition the IGP in seven days

The Akatsi South Youth Parliament on Tuesday 19th April, 2022 held a townhall meeting to interact with the general public and issued a communique setting their roadmaps in addressing the security issues in the town.

The speaker of the Youth Parliament Right Honourable Daniel Amuzu Kale in his speech declared that, they will petition the Inspector General of Police; and other relevant quarters in seven days if nothing is done by their leaders about the issue.

“The Akatsi South Youth Parliament is giving the various leaders and stakeholders within the municipal a 7day ultimatum (effective today Tuesday 19th April, 2022) to petition the IGP or any relevant quarters (Ministry of Interior or Parliament) to constitute an independent body to investigate into the following cases; ……the death of Etornam Avulekpor in November, 2021, Setor Agormeda on Saturday 8th April, 2022, Hamza Ademu on Saturday 9th April, 2022 and injury of Nelly, Jemilu, Yao Agboyibor and Atsu”  the statement said.

Present at the meeting were some Chiefs, various political party leaders, representatives from the Volta regional youth parliament and the member of parliament for the constituency Hon. Bernard Ahiafor who was given the opportunity to also interact with the public where he announced his intentions of collaborating with some opinion leaders to write a petition to the ministry of interior.

The Youth Parliament in their communique requested for the autopsy report of one Etornam Avulekpor who died of an alleged police brutality in November, 2021 to be made public; a situation which is triggering all these crises currently.

They also demanded for immediate identification and interdiction of the various police officers who allegedly shot live bullets into a rioting crowd that resulted into the killing of a 16year old Hamza Ademu and Yao Agboyibor who is currently receiving treatment.

The youth expressed their grievances freely and were glad towards Youth parliament and their MP for their concerns.

Hon. Daniel Amuzu-Kale called on the Akatsi Police and even the media personnel in the municipal to exercise enough professionalism in line of their duties.

In their concluding statement, they outlined some long-term measures to help control crime and indiscipline in the municipality.
