The government says the meeting is to prevent any industrial action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
The government is expected to meet with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) on Thursday (6 January) over the latter’s demand for better conditions of service.
According to the government, the meeting is to prevent any industrial action by the union.
Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show, the deputy minister of employment and labour relations, Bright Wireko-Brobbey said “UTAG has also put out their demands and this morning we are meeting them to look at their demands so that there will not be any strike action.”
In August 2021, UTAG embarked on strike to demand better conditions of service as agreed upon in 2012.
However, the association suspended the strike in mid-August to sit with the government and negotiate their terms.
That suspension did not last long as the association resumed its industrial action stating that both parties could not reach an agreement.
The association is up to date demanding the implementation of a 2012 Single Spine package which put entry-level lecturers on a salary equivalent of $2,084 while the current level puts lecturers’ salaries around $900.
