The pollster Ben Ephson has questioned the timing of the announcement of the 24-hour economy policy by the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
The 24-hour economy policy, announced by Mahama last year, is intended to usher in a flagship programme to be introduced to revive the country’s economy if the NDC wins power in the December elections.
Under the proposed tool to kickstart Ghana’s economy, the state will provide incentives such as tax breaks to manufacturers and various categories of workers to run extra shifts, creating more employment.
However, speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (20 February), Ephson said the policy should have been announced shortly before the general election and argued that it has already lost momentum.
“Let me give you a typical example about strategy. If John Mahama had announced the 24-hour economy a month to voting, he would have gotten the advantage of people thinking that it can work.
“Within a month there would be discussions and as people are going to vote, they would give him the benefit [of the doubt]. He announced it too early. Now, virtually, the 24-hour economy euphoria is gone,” Ephson said.
