Afenyo-Markin condemns police assault during ‘Save the Judiciary’ demo

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned what he describes as an unprovoked assault by a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The incident occurred at the entrance of Parliament House in Accra, where Afenyo-Markin was leading a delegation to present a petition advocating for judicial independence.

According to Afenyo-Markin, as he approached the barricade at Parliament House, a uniformed police officer, identified as Constable Forson, struck him on the left side of his chest with significant force.

The impact left him dazed and short of breath, prompting immediate assistance from parliamentary security personnel and fellow demonstrators. He was escorted to a nearby rest area to recover before proceeding with the petition delivery.

The officer involved reportedly disappeared from the scene shortly after the incident, raising suspicions of an attempt to avoid accountability.

Afenyo-Markin has called for a thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that the assault was a deliberate act of aggression.

In his statement, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the professionalism exhibited by most police officers during the demonstration, contrasting it with the actions of Constable Forson.

He urged the public and media to focus on the core issues of the demonstration—defending the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary—rather than being distracted by the altercation.
