Agyeman-Duah to Mahama: Debate could influence voters, accept the challenge
Baffour Agyeman-Duah, a former UN senior governance advisor, has advised John Mahama, the flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress to accept the challenge to debate his main opponent, Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that his main opponent – John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) – is running away from debating him for fear of being exposed as having no credible ideas or policies.
In an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (12 July), Professor Agyeman-Duah said debates are useful exercises that help to assess candidates and can influence the voting pattern of potential voters.
“The NDC does not seem to think that debate will add anything to their plans, but I think it is a useful exercise and I will advise them to accept it,” Professor Agyeman-Duah said.
“I suspect that because there are new ways of getting to the voter, the NDC does not see a debate necessary. A debate can change a lot of people’s minds, so I think they should accept it,” Agyeman-Duah said.
