The government has withdrawn Legislative Instrument (L.I) seeking to amend the Road Traffic Regulations to allow Members of Parliaments to use sirens and be exempt from speed limits.
The L.I has received backlash, with the Minority Caucus demanding its immediate withdrawal by the Transport Minister.
Earlier, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin at a public lecture on private member bills at the University of Ghana, denied knowledge of a Legislative Instrument before the House seeking to amend the Road Traffic Regulations.
On the floor of Parliament on Tuesday (16 July), the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah who moved the motion on behalf of the Roads and Highways Minister said the decision comes after extensive review with the leadership of the House.
“This has become necessary based on the extensive engagement with leadership. It is so withdrawn,” the minister said.
