Mahama Pays Tribute To Pope Francis
Former President John Dramani Mahama has joined world leaders and millions of Catholics in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away earlier today at the age of 88.
In a statement shared on social media hours after the announcement of the Pope’s passing, President Mahama expressed his condolences to the global Roman Catholic community and paid tribute to the Pope’s legacy.
“The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing,” Mahama wrote. “On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana during this time of profound grief.”
The President also shared a personal memory of his visit to the Vatican during his tenure, recalling a meeting with the late Pontiff that left a lasting impression.
“I fondly remember visiting the Vatican with my wife, Lordina, where we had the distinct honour of meeting Pope Francis,” he said. “His legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations.”
President Mahama praised Pope Francis for his dedication to the poor and marginalised, saying his leadership and advocacy transcended borders and religious divides.
“His leadership and advocacy for the poor and marginalised resonate deeply. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was elected to the papacy in 2013. He was the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. His papacy was marked by a focus on humility, environmental stewardship, and a relentless push for social justice.
