Some Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Keta, Volta Region have stormed their Constituency Office demanding a halt to the Party’s electoral process in vetting their Electoral Area Coordinators.
This follows the urge of party members to be approved by the vetting committee after many years of commitment to the party.
Sandcityradioonline.com gathered that these party members started yelling at the vetting committee members for disqualifying them. According to them, they have secured an injunction to halt the vetting and election of the polling station executives and the electoral area coordinators, thus their desire to disorganize the vetting processes.
“The Court here in Keta has laid an injunction on the processes and that’s why we don’t understand what is actually going on here. We have toiled for the party for so long, so equal opportunities should be given to all. If the party executives won’t understand us and act according to the orders from the court, then it will always be a disaster.” One of the party members (name withheld) explained to Sandcityradioonline.com.
Speaking to the Vetting Committee Chairman Philip Bokorgah, he indicated that some of the party members who picked forms did not meet the criteria of application, thus their inability to be approved by the committee as electoral area coordinators.
“Some of our members who picked the forms even didn’t meet the deadline for submission of forms. Some of them also did not meet the criteria of application. This is a national assignment and has to be carried out with due diligence. Simply, we cannot approve people who are not eligible. That will cause much confusion and make us liable to any form of punishment from our superiors. The right thing must be done and that was what we carried out”. Mr. Bokorgah explained.
He added that the injunction was served to them to halt the vetting and election of polling station executives but not of electoral area coordinators.
“We were served a letter by the court (injunction) to bring processes of vetting applicants for the polling station executive positions to a standstill on February 3rd this year. But this injunction is only effective for 10 days from the date of issuance. Look where we are now”. Philip Bokorgah narrated.
However, one of the aggrieved members who is identified by colleagues as “Pusher” has devised means and bolted with some relevant documents and car keys belonging to the Party’s Deputy Regional Communications Director, Hon Innocent Papa Gobah at the end of the vetting process.
This led to intense muddle when the security men around tried to retrieve the documents and car keys but their efforts proved futile.
After several attempts, the security men scheduled an arrest of “Pusher” so they could hand him over to the Police for the retrieval of the documents and car keys he had bolted away with but this turned bloody as majority of the party members around, attacked the security men with stones and knives.
As a result, the team leader of the security men sustained several injuries. Aside from that, the windscreens and side mirrors of the party’s vehicle were badly damaged with stones.
Some party members told Sandcityradioonline.com that they suspected the Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Emmanuel Gemegah to have played roles leading to the chaos while others also stated that their Regional Party Chairman Hon. Makafui Woanyah is to blame for all that transpired.
Speaking to the Party Executives in the constituency, they stressed that soon, investigations will be carried out and legal measures be ignited against members who perpetrated such brouhaha.
