12 drown in Apam waters

The 12 were part of a group that went to the beach to play and swim despite a ban on beach gatherings in Ghana

At least 12 persons have been confirmed dead at Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, the police have confirmed.

The 12 were part of a group that went to the beach to play and swim but got drowned in the sea on Sunday evening, according to an official police report.

Police spokesperson in the Central Region, ASP Irene Oppong, said the bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved after a search and rescue operation.

The deceased are believed to be between the ages of 14 to 17.

She said two boys namely Simon Dadzie,15, and Godfred Apprentsie, 14, were rescued by the search team and are receiving treatment at the St. Luke Catholic Hospital at Apam.

ASP Oppong said the police have begun full investigation into the incident.

Beaches in Ghana have remained closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
