Ghana’s 8th Parliament on recess ahead of 2024 Elections

GBCGHANAONLINE.COM understands that the Parliament of Ghana is currently on recess, with a provision for emergency recall by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. Such a recall can occur independently, in accordance with Article 112 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, or by the invocation of Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament by the required number of Members.

According to the Parliamentary Calendar for the Third Session of the Eighth Parliament, which began on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, the session is expected to conclude on Friday, January 3, 2025, paving the way for the Ninth Parliament, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in the Chamber.

This will be followed by an official ceremony at the Black Stars Square.

The Third and final Meeting of this Session, which began on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, was originally set for four weeks to address public business and was adjourned on Friday, November 1, 2024.

During this period, Members of Parliament are expected to focus on their constituencies, canvassing and campaigning for the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

As of Tuesday, November 5, 2024, Parliament is on a mandatory recess until Friday, January 3, 2025. Barring any recall, Parliament will resume on Monday, January 6, 2025, prior to its dissolution, to conduct public business for the First Session of the Ninth Parliament.

This new session will feature a new Speaker, new leadership, and new Members of Parliament, with the possibility of the NDC or NPP forming the Majority or Minority in the House, potentially alongside one to three Independent Members of Parliament.
