Volta Region aims to become Ghana’s leading maize producer
The Volta Region is positioning itself as Ghana’s leading maize producer, leveraging its fertile lands and strong agricultural base. This initiative aligns with efforts to enhance food security and economic growth, making the region a key player in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
At an Agricultural Forum in Ho, organized by the Volta Africa American Chamber (VAAC) and the Volta Development Forum (VDF), stakeholders discussed strategies to boost maize production. Mr. Daniel Agboka-Dzegede, President of VAAC and Executive Director of VDF, emphasized the region’s potential to become a top maize-producing hub, complementing its existing dominance in rice farming.
To strengthen agricultural development, a delegation of U.S. farmers, led by Jay Reiners of the United States Grains Council, recently visited Ghana. Their collaboration aims to improve maize yields through knowledge-sharing and modern farming techniques.
However, climate variability remains a challenge, affecting maize output in Volta and other regions. To mitigate risks, the World Bank and ECOWAS are supporting the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme (FSRP), which focuses on sustainable food production.
Through strategic partnerships and resilience programs, the Volta Region is set to transform Ghana’s maize industry and contribute significantly to national food security.
