Agavedzi residents cry for action as tidal waves continue to ‘swallow’ homes

Tidal waves continue to wreak havoc along parts of the Volta Region’s coastline, with residents expressing deep frustration over the delay in the construction of Phase Two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Wall—more than a month after a presidential promise.

Though some companies have visited the site for surveys, actual construction is yet to begin. In the meantime, residents say they are losing their properties and livelihoods to the advancing sea.

In coastal communities across the Volta Region, tidal waves remain a relentless threat to lives and livelihoods.

Residents say, despite a recent visit and firm assurances from President John Dramani Mahama regarding the construction of the sea defence wall, no tangible work has commenced on the ground.

They say their lands are being eroded, homes destroyed, and livelihoods washed away—all under the watch of government promises yet to materialise.

“The president assured us of the construction of the sea defence wall, but what is happening after he left is even worse. Our houses are still being destroyed by the waves,” said Faith Tettey, a resident.

“We don’t have a place to lay our heads, and we have little to eat. Life is getting difficult each day, and we want urgent attention to save our lives,” lamented Antoinette Afedo, another resident.

In an act of desperation, some families have begun exhuming the remains of their buried loved ones, relocating them inland in a bid to save them from the encroaching sea.

Gideon Tettey, Unit Committee Member for the Amutinu-Salakofe Electoral Area, acknowledges that while the resettlement project is still ongoing, what the people need most is visible progress on the sea defence wall.

“We are not seeing any sign of construction again. We are pleading for them to come and begin the construction for us,” he said.
