Power crisis in Ho: Businesses, residents reel under unstable supply
Residents and businesses in Ho and other parts of the Volta Region have endured nearly a month of frequent power outages, causing major disruptions to daily activities.
The unstable electricity supply, characterized by sudden blackouts and prolonged low voltage, has left many struggling to maintain their businesses and homes.
Small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those relying on cold storage, digital operations, and uninterrupted power, have been hit the hardest. Many business owners have turned to generators, but the rising cost of fuel is becoming unbearable.
“I now spend over GH₵150 on fuel every two days just to keep my salon running,” said Sumaila Ahmed, a barber at Ho Bankoe.

Seyram Foe-Ahorney, who runs a cold store near Ho Technical University, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Every day, I’m forced to choose between running a generator and making a profit.”
Households are also feeling the impact. Residents report food spoilage, damaged electrical appliances, and growing uncertainty about when power supply will stabilise.

In response to concerns, the Volta Regional Minister visited the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) office in Ho, followed by another visit to GRIDCo in Akosombo, to assess the situation. Expressing dissatisfaction with the unreliable power supply, the Minister highlighted the severe effect on businesses and households.
ECG’s Volta Regional General Manager, Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, explained that the outages stem from voltage fluctuations from GRIDCo.

She assured the Minister that both entities are working to stabilize the region’s electricity supply.
With businesses and residents hoping for swift solutions, the ongoing crisis underscores the need for urgent and sustained intervention to prevent further hardship.
