Dzifa Gomashie Raises Concerns Over Younger Officers Being Promoted Ahead of Seniors
Veteran politician and Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Dzifa Gomashie, has expressed concern over the promotion of younger officers above their more experienced seniors in Ghana’s security services. She questioned whether such a practice is beneficial to discipline, morale, and professionalism within the ranks.
Speaking in an interview, Gomashie highlighted that while promotions should be based on merit, they should also take into account experience and years of service. She emphasized that sidelining senior officers in favor of younger ones could create resentment, weaken institutional structures, and disrupt the chain of command.
“This trend raises serious questions about fairness and motivation within the security forces,” she said. “Are we prioritizing competence and leadership, or are we undermining the contributions of long-serving officers?”
Her remarks have sparked a debate on leadership succession and promotion policies within Ghana’s armed forces, police, and other security agencies. While some argue that promoting younger officers injects fresh ideas and energy, others believe it risks destabilizing institutions built on hierarchy and experience.
Gomashie urged authorities to review the criteria for promotions to ensure a balanced and just system that upholds both meritocracy and respect for seniority.
