Final year student, five others die in Volta Lake accident
The police have confirmed the death of six persons who died as a result of a capsized canoe on the Volta Lake.
A final year student and five others on Tuesday (16 March) got drowned in the Volta Lake at Kpando, Volta Region, authorities have confirmed.
Evelyn Gadagoe of Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School was part of a 10-member passenger canoe travelling on the Volta Lake when a heavy storm hit their canoe and capsized.
Four of the passengers on the canoe survived the accident leaving the final year student and five others dead.
According to persons close to Gadagoe, she was heading to her okro farm on the other side of the river in order to harvest and sell some of the crops to raise money for her educational expenses.
The police with the help of local authorities and disaster management officials have since retrieved the bodies and have been deposited at the morgue at Kpando.
“We heard the information regarding the incident from some fisher folks who happened to chance on the development. So they had attempted to rescue the victims but unfortunately, that didn’t materialise of which some persons in the canoe died,” Volta Regional police spokesperson Prince Dogbatse told Joy FM.
One too many
Ten persons lost their lives while 17 others were rescued on the Volta Lake in May last year, according to the police.
The boat, which was carrying mostly traders from Dzemeni in the Volta Region, was heading to Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains area of the Eastern Region when it capsized midway through the journey near Anivizi, a village along the Volta Lake.
Overcrowding and poor safety checks have often been the cause of boat accidents on the lake.
