President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to transform their frustrations into constructive actions, emphasising the need for unity and collaboration to restore the nation’s progress and rebuild its foundations.
Mahama delivered a stirring victory speech after being declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.
Speaking to jubilant supporters on Monday (9 December), he expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for entrusting him with a historic mandate and pledged to lead the nation into a new chapter of unity, prosperity, and good governance.
Mahama began by thanking the Almighty God for what he described as a divinely orchestrated outcome. He also extended his appreciation to Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for demonstrating statesmanship by conceding defeat even before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration.
“This concession largely diffused the tensions that are characteristic of high-stakes elections such as this,” Mahama noted.
He revealed that he had also received a congratulatory call from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during which they agreed to inaugurate a joint transitional team by Wednesday, 11 December to ensure a smooth and effective transition of power.
Calling the results one of the most emphatic victories in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, Mahama expressed humility and honour at the overwhelming support from the electorate.
“This mandate represents the Ghanaian people’s decisive action against bad governance, corruption, and arrogance in leadership,” he remarked.
He also congratulated NDC parliamentary candidates for their sweeping victories across constituencies and acknowledged the sacrifices of his campaign team, party agents, and volunteers.
Making history with vice president-elect
Highlighting the historic election of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President, Mahama celebrated her decency, humility, and inspirational leadership.
“Your name has become synonymous with breaking boundaries. You have opened the door for many women across Ghana and beyond,” he said.
A call for unity and rebuilding
Addressing the challenges facing the nation, Mahama called for unity in resetting Ghana’s course after years of economic and social crises.
He promised to initiate critical governance reforms to restore confidence in the political system and prioritize the well-being of every Ghanaian.
“My brothers and sisters, we want a Ghana that works for everyone—not just a privileged few. Together, we will rebuild this country and provide affordable housing, healthcare, and sustainable jobs,” he said.
Warning against vandalism
Mahama condemned reports of vandalism at government installations, urging Ghanaians to channel their frustrations into positive efforts to rebuild the nation.
“Let us be brief in our celebrations. The expectations of Ghanaians are high, and we cannot afford to fail them,” he cautioned.
A new beginning for Ghana
Mahama reiterated his commitment to serve all Ghanaians, regardless of their political affiliation, and reaffirmed Ghana’s status as a trailblazer on the global stage.
“Our best days are not behind us. They are ahead of us. Together, we will achieve the Ghana of our hopes and dreams,” he said.
