Residents of Akatsi, Abor, and Environs Petition Against ECG for Alleged Misconduct, Bribery

Some concerned residents of Akatsi and Abor, in the Volta Region have filed a formal petition against Management and staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the area for alleged misconduct.

The petition, addressed to the Managing Director of ECG, highlights persistent and growing concerns over the office’s actions and inactions, which have led to frustration, economic hardship, and mistrust among the residents.

The petitioners claim that the ECG’s District Manager in the enclave and staff have engaged in consistent overbilling, fraudulent activities, and bribery, affecting numerous customers.

According to the petition, customers are being issued electricity bills that are grossly inflated and inconsistent with actual usage. The petition stated that bills were generated without proper meter readings or transparency, leading to unjust billing for estimated consumption.

Mr Jerry Afeku, Secretary of the concerned residents mentioned that there are multiple customers’ report that certain ECG staff members are manipulating billing systems for personal gain.

“This includes tampering with meters under dubious circumstances and imposing fabricated arrears on innocent customers. Additionally, ECG staff are allegedly demanding bribes from customers in exchange for services like reconnections, new meter installations, and adjustments to bills,” he said.

The petitioners are seeking immediate action from ECG Headquarters and relevant oversight bodies to address these concerns. They are requesting an investigation into the conduct of the District Manager and implicated staff members, an audit of all recent billing records in the affected district, and the suspension and prosecution of any staff found guilty of corruption or misconduct.
